What is RFID?

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is a way of storing information on a small tag that communicates via radio frequency with a reader and/or antenna. Each reader and/or antenna will then communicate with a controller that translates the data into a computer or server.

Each tag contains a chip that stores the product information. There are two types of tags, passive tags and active tags. There are many types of readers and antenna. There are large variances in the amount of data that can be stored, lifetime of the tags, and the distances they can be read from, depending upon the type tag selected. Some of the more important business benefits of using RFID include:

  • No line of sight required
  • Able to read multiple items at one time.
  • Tracking of items and equipment in real time.
  • Reduced labor costs.
